The Curb Cut

Every craftsman has a "First Slip." Mine happened in 2019, on a hot Tuesday afternoon in the heart of Detroit.

I was rushing a delivery to the old Motown Museum on West Grand. You know the spot — right next to the record store that still smells like vinyl and nostalgia. I was late, the package was heavy, and I thought I could shave off a few minutes by taking a shortcut down that narrow alley.

My van after the curb cut

That's the sound of a rear axle saying "nope!"

But the van? She's a beast, but that day she caught a curb just right. The suspension bottomed out with a sound like a snare drum. I thought I was golden. Turns out, I bent the rear axle so bad I had to push the van three blocks to the shop.

The Lesson: Respect the route. Respect the machine. And never, ever take a shortcut when you're running late.

The package was late, but the owner? He just laughed, said, "That's the sound of Detroit, Bobbi!" And you know what? He was right. That day taught me that the best deliveries aren't just about speed — they're about the story you tell along the way.

"Failure is not the end—it's the sound of your van learning a new rhythm."

So now, every time I hit a bump, I think of that day. And I keep moving, because that's what we do in Macomb. We don't stop. We laugh, we learn, and we keep the wheels turning.

Check out my other stories on the site, or drop by the shop if you need a delivery done right. I promise I won't take any more shortcuts!
